64 1838 Petition to Connecticut Legislature re: Windham County Liquor Licenses

Probably a draft, as none of the stated "undersigned" are present at bottom. 12 1/2 x 15 1/2" sheet, folded extensively. Blank back. Text reads in various parts: [We] call your attention to the existing law, which is supposed to compel the Civil Authorities of eash town to recommend & grant license for the sale of ardent spirits, and also, to lay before you one of the numerous cases where it bears grievously on the inhabitants" . . . "Shall Protestant laws force converts to this priesthood, or the maintenance of its altars where they are regarded only as a nuisance? Shall the industrious farmer continue to be taunted with the drunkard's boast, that your property is mortgaged for my support?" . . . "[We call attention to] the painful details & consequences that have been brought to light, shewing the mental, moral and physical evils resulting from drinking this devouring fire" . . . "and the class of persons who mix Cognac Brandy with colored American spirits and sell the same for 'pure' French Brandy" . . ." and who have no principle, only as connected with the love of money, apothecary percentages and extravagant profits" . . ."We desire you to pay as little regard to their stories as they do to the wild moans of the maniacs, the cries of more than orphan children and the tears of worse than widowed mothers, those unpitied martyrs, whose sufferings are perpetuated in their agency."
